Mini Tutorials

These mini-tutorials are to show you all about the genealogy resources that are available to the modern-day family detective! Some are free, some require a subscription. Some are easy to use, and some are a little bit more difficult.

All the resources listed here are used by us for family research purposes.

Understanding the Census Print
National censuses have been taken every 10 years and record everyone in a dwelling on a particular night. They provide the family historian with invaluable personal information about their ancestors, their friends, neighbours, jobs and living conditions. The most recent census report available to the public is always 100 years old. The earliest census which records actual names is 1841.

Name Research and Coat of Arms Print
Finding out about your surname can provide some surprising insights into your distant ancestors, perhaps your name refers to a trade like Taylor or Baker, or maybe there is some foreign blood in your line.
Some families will also have heraldic heritage, a Coat of Arms used in battle or a Crest to identify aristocratic connections. Family Detective can research this information for you, see our Research Packages section.

Birth, Marriage & Death Certificates Print
These are invaluable documents for progressing your family history back through the first 100-150 years, which is often the most difficult period. BMD certificates will tell you ages, locations, legal and maiden names and can clear up many family myths by themselves! If you no longer have any living relatives who can help you with this, Family Detective can order copies of BMD certificates on your behalf. We will happily discuss this with you upon application.

Photos and Correspondence Print
Personal memorabilia is often the best place to start your family research. Get in touch with the older members of your family and interview them. They may have some photos or correspondence that you can ask about. Items like this provide a natural talking point and are invaluable in prompting memories, stories and facts. Don't forget to take notes so that you can recall all the information later on.
